Most people do not have any interest from where their clothes, shoes, and materials are come. They do not know base material of those are coming from oil, either. I did not have any interest in it as others before last spring. However, in 2014 spring semester from my major class, I heard oil is going to be depleted in 50 years at most. It made me shocked because i can not expect a life without an oil. Since then, I started to have an interest in not only oil market, also alternative energy. I choose these 3 articles below, because I could see how each nations are getting ready for this phenomenon. First article is “Greece’s sole oil producer raises recoverable reserves estimate”, by Yun Sung Min. Second one is “Denmark to launch $1 Billion Green Energy Fund” by Ahn Bo Mi. The last one is “UK approves world’s largest offshore wind farm” by Park Hyoung Min.

The first article is “Greece’s sole oil producer raises recoverable reserves estimate” from Yun Sung Min’s blog, and I chose this article because it shows one of the way of getting ready to their future oil problem. As reported by this article, only Greek oil producer increased the amount of recoverable oil, estimated about 30 million barrels. It is estimated about as same as amount of total oil consuming in next 15 years. Yun Sung Min said It is very good news for greeks society and economy, also saying they have to develop future energy resources. It seems like he already knew what I was about to say. This is not simply a message of hope, but can be a real benefit for greek at least couple of decades, can saving their budget of importing oil. I think Greece can make their energy future plan even better, with developing alternative energy, such as wind power, solar power, biodiesel, etc. It would be much better if Greece government promotes public campaigns or advertisements about using high-efficient energy equipments. As amount of recoverable oil is increasing, they can take a benefit from it; if they take more effort to save the energy, it will be more effective.

The second one is “Denmark to launch $1 Billion Green Energy Fund” from Ahn Bo Mi’s blog, because it provides a perfect examplary model of how government should prepare beforehand. According to this article, Denmark government will make a fund in order to save an energy, as scale of $1 billion. It will help people to get a job in alternative energy, being more independent from North sea oil, too. Ahn Bo Mi says as gas and oil are going to be depleted, so all over the world, including Korea, should make an effort to develop renewable energy. She also says renewable energy would be the next world power. I agree on the aspect of making an effort, but I do not think renewable energy would be next world power. I am definitely on her side for ‘we should make an effort’ part without a doubt. However, I have a quite different opinion on next world power part, because renewable energy has so many limitations, also most of alternative energy in contemporary world will not be used anymore if scientists invents perfect substitution of oil. Both Solar and Wind are having time and space problems, but I think these will not be used as much as people expects, because of its low efficiency and value as an intermediate technology towards perfection. I highly agree on Korea should make an effort to develop alternative energy, but those of contemporary world can not be a next world power because of low efficiency and imperfection.

I choose the last one as “UK approves world’s largest offshore wind farm” from Park Hyoung Min’s blog, because I can catch what else of alternative energy are existing, and how much they were developed. According to this article, UK government approved offshore wind farm, can make an electricity of 1,200 megawatts. UK government also strives to get an order from US east, too. Park Hyoung Min seems to think this wind farm really positive, because it does not leave any pollutions to environment, also for substituting oil. In addition, I got  surprised because he mentioned about nuclear power plant, saying it does not fits on underdeveloped country. Frankly speaking, I could not think of underdeveloped country, because I could not hear any news about alternative energy from them. I agree on his opinion for ‘nuclear power is not a good way for substituting oil’. Although it is much more efficient comparing to steam power plant, it leaves radioactive waste, can make a terrible disaster. We already know some disasters due to outflow of radioactive waste, Chernobyl and Fukushima. However, I think Wind power is not as good as what Hyoung Min is thinking, because they are only generating when winds are blowing, if it does not blow, it can not generates; low efficiency. I agree nuclear power is not always good, but wind power is not always good, either.

By looking all these articles, I could feel many countries are already preparing depletion and developing alternative energy. Increasing recoverable oil in first article, making a green energy fund in second article, and wind power in last articles are representing kinds of alternatives of oil. I’m now junior in university, and planning to get a job in oil refining or alternative energy. Although I think all of alternative energies such as solar, wind, water, biodiesel are not having the bright future, but if someone, could be me also, makes the way of replacing oil perfectly, there will be nothing more terrific than this. I become more passionate on alternative energy through these works.
